Assignment 3 Using One Light to communicate an emotion

In the first photo of Julianne, I want to express the optimistic and positive feeling I got from her. All most every time, I speak with her, she is smiling. In the class, her bright smiles light up the room. So I chose the white background and try to light up the whole space, even though we can only use one light.

I set the light in her left front and a mirror in her right front. I also used a diffusion board in front of the light at an angle of 45 to the wall. The mirror is vertical to the wall. The final move is asking her to hold a sliver reflector and kept it horizontal. Because the angel of incidence equals angle of reflection, the only light source is on her left side, but the shadow on her face is very weak and the whole image is bright.

In this second photograph for the opposite of Julianne, I want to create a gloomy and depressing atmosphere. I chose the black background instead of white and asked Julianne sit far away from it, because I need to keep it in the dark. Then I set the light right behind her head and very close to her hair.

The comparison between the subtle, soft light on the background and strong, sharp light went through her hair showed the inverse square law.
